Awkward is one word for it. But in my experience, it's best not to dispose of them, either - it's far more effective to hold their safety over the head of anyone who happens to find out. There's usually somewhere that they can be held, sometimes with a little creativity. I've had to do that at least once; it wasn't the most convenient of arrangements, but it worked well for what it was.
